Rider of the Week
David Slauenwhite and Jesse, at Linwal Acres, Lower Millstream, NB. David had a couple of bad experiences with horses in his youth and avoided horses until recently. However, after being exposed to the horses at Linwal for three years, he has progressed to haltering and leading them to the barn. He also gives them all the pats and scratches they can handle. These days, when David visits the farm, he brings his barn boots, picks up the shovel or fork, and helps to clean stalls, bring horses in, or even feed them in close quarters in their stalls. This from someone who used to jump back out of the way whenever a horse twitched or moved even a little. Great progress! Rider of the Week.

High on horses...
Lawrence Scanlan - you may recognize his name from Wild About Horses: Our Timeless Passion for the Horse, Riding High (Ian Millar) and The Man Who Listens To Horses (Monty Roberts) - has written an article about the soothing effect of riding on the mind, body, and soul: "The slow pace of the walking horse had calmed us and taken us, literally and figuratively, to a place we had never been before." Check out the article.

Spielberg Withdraws Plans for Horse Facility
Director Steven Spielberg, under fire over his proposal to build a $7 million, five-story horse-riding ring for his wife in an exclusive neighborhood, has temporarily withdrawn the plans and will meet with opponents of the project, his spokesman said on Tuesday. ``There will be another submission,'' Levy said. ``They are listening to the neighbors and the only way to really continue that process is to withdraw the application.'' Horse Quote for the Week
"But whether you regard the horse with awe or love,
it is impossible to escape the sheer power of his presence, the phenomenal
influence he exerts on the lives of all of us who decided at some stage that we
wanted to become riders."
~ Mary Wanless, The Natural Rider
Horses in Unexpected Places
Who Ever Heard of a Horse in the House? Jacqueline Tresl, that's who. Her horse, Misha (15.3 hh, 1300 lbs) lives with her in a 1000 square foot house! As a five-month old foal, she was brought in by the woodstove to help fight pneumonia. Yes, she is housebroken!! Apparently it wasn't that difficult - using cream-filled doughnuts as a reward - and only took about three weeks. Jacqui explains that some guests find Misha a bit overwhelming but that she behaves very well. Misha shows great interest when anyone is cooking (especially popcorn) but spends a lot of time outside with her owners. Jacqui rides her often but never uses any tack. Misha's story, Who Ever Heard of a Horse in the House? was published in March 2000.
