Update on World Cup Finals
30 March - Today, the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture did not take a decision on possible exception on ban of movement of horses for the riders qualified to the World Cup Final Jumping. They will meet again on Monday and inform the FEI. As Sweden will only allow horses into the country, if these horses have been resident in a Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD)-free country for the last 14 days prior to their arrival in Sweden, it is unlikely that they can arrive on time to participate to the Final. World Cup Dressage - Anky van Grunsven Unable to Defend her Title
Despite all efforts of the World Cup Director Joep Bartels, the Dutch authorities did not allow exception to the ban of all animal movements in the Netherlands. Title defender Anky van Grunsven, Sonja Gademan, and the winner of Asian league Toshihiko Kiso, who was staying at Anky’s stables, will therefore not be able to participate. Gonnelien Rothenberger, who finished second in the Western European League standings, was fortunately staying in Germany and could go to Denmark. This morning, the Dressage Committee decided not to replace the qualified riders who couldn’t come to Denmark. More on the event and a list of competitors....

Equine Research Centre Studies Stall Flooring System
Research results show that while using the Paddock Mat® system with shavings, as compared to asphalt flooring with shavings, dust particle numbers present in the Paddock Mat® stall were significantly lower (see figure). Less bedding was needed to both start and maintain the stalls when using Paddock Mat®. Despite the reduced amount of bedding used, similar low levels of ammonia were detected with Paddock Mat® and asphalt flooring. The resting behaviour of the horses remained the same with both flooring systems. Data on the resting behaviour gathered through close video observation of the horses in the study showed that this behaviour remained unchanged on either flooring material, despite the reduced amount of bedding used with the Paddock Mat®. Horse Quote for the Week
For many of us, the horse is a symbol of what is
right with the world. In spite of generations of careful breeding, the horse
still seems to be a step or two out of the wild. In spite of training and
confinement, the horse at gallop seems to be a step or two from freedom.

Horses in Unexpected Places
Chickadee magazine designated it's March 2001 issue the Horses Issue. It has tons of great activities, puzzles, games, and stories about horses. Two pages of "Did ya know..." include trivia about the horse with the longest tail: An American Palomino named Chinook had the longest tail of any horse. It was about as long as a schoolbus! Chickadee has also included safety tips, pictures and descriptions of a variety of pony breeds, a mustang poster, and a "Running Wild Board Game." We found a copy at the local library.
