The show season is wrapping up for another year and the riding season - outdoors at least - is winding down. As you leaf through the pages of Practical Horseman or Horse & Rider with your morning coffee, your mind wanders to one of the wonderful - but far off - equine extravaganzas. If you could pick one dream event to attend, what would it be? Have you always dreamed of watching (and shopping!) at Congress, the Royal Winter Fair, Equine Affaire, Equitana? Or has some other mega horse event captured your imagination? Cast your vote in our latest online poll - and we'd love to hear your stories and comments on our Riders' Forum!

Congress Continues!
The Freestyle Reining event included several patriotic themes and tributes to the events of September 11, but a classic took top honors in the open division. Josh Armstrong, of LaMesa, NM, riding Suerte Fuerte, wowed the crowd with a bridleless, reinless run to an instrumental version of the Mary Poppins' theme, Chim Chim Cheree. Dressed as a chimney sweep, Armstrong guided the black horse with only a sweep's broom to solid circles, stops, spins and lead changes that resulted in a standing ovation. The reserve winner in the open division was Drake Johnson, riding Genuine Cowboy Jac with only one rein around his neck. Johnson, in red, white and blue, rode the palomino to the Faith Hill theme from the movie Pearl Harbor. Third was Bueno San Lena, with Pete Kyle, dressed as and performing to Mambo No. 5. More from Congress...

Horse Quote for the Week
Riding allows me to distance myself from life's daily occurrences.
When I am on a horse I forget everything else. I am absorbed by what I do. It is
a certain escapism. When sitting on a horse my mind reaches a higher plane,
especially when walking on a loose rein!
~ Jean-Louis Guntz, quoted in Visions of Dressage by Elizabeth Furth
Horses in Unexpected Places
Banana peels, raisins, cranberry juice, leather gloves, Tim Horton's coffee and donuts, and even dulse (they are Atlantic Canadian, after all!)! We heard it all when we asked for your horse's favorite cravings. All of the entries were great, but our favorite was Muffet Khemo Sabi, owned by Shelley Roberts of Sydney, NS. He will steal the bubble gum straight from her mouth! Muffet Khemo Sabi has been in the Roberts family for twenty years, and doesn't realize he's a horse until he's in the show ring!
