Transition Task Force Makes Recommendations for October AGM

For 2001, the Task Force recommends an allocation of 65% of governance cost to the Sport Division, 25% to the Breeds & Industry Division and 5% each to the Recreation and Provincial Divisions respectively.  This formula could be subject to change in future years.  The Task Force recommended changes to the current CEF financial reporting system to
enable a review of shared revenues and expenses at year-end. More on the Task Force Recommendations.

Horses in Unexpected Places

Seeing-eye.... horses!?! The Guide Horse Foundation in North Carolina is training miniature horses as guide animals for the blind. The minis are taught to walk along side a person, guide through traffic, and generally perform all the duties of a seeing-eye dog. The horses are house-broken and outfitted with 'tennis shoes' for traction and to muffle the noise of their hooves on tile floors, etc. Janet Burlson, the trainer, suggests that their longevity (30-40 year life expectancy) makes minis better candidates for the job than dogs. Each horse undergoes 6-18 months of intensive training, then a month of training with the prospective owner before moving to its new home. Truly an unusual job for horses!
