Ainsley Vince and Catch 22 Beat Four Olympians at HITS Catskills

Ainsley Vince, 24, of Milton, Ontario, Canada, riding Catch 22 out-jumped a field of 42 horses to win the $100,000 EMO Grand Prix today at HITS Catskills in Ellenville, New York. "It was a bit of an intimidating field to walk into," said Vince, referring to the start order that included four Olympians-Margie Engle, Nona Garson, Todd Minikus, and Eric LaMaze. Vince has represented Canada twice, including at the World Cup in Las Vegas last year, and has competed against some of these show jumping superstars before. Going into the jump-off today, she said she'd hoped for a clear round and sixth place, but she finished more than two seconds faster than her closest competitor, second place Jeffery Welles on Riviera. "I never realized my horse was that fast," said Vince. Catch 22, owned by Vince and Trinity Farm earned $30,000 for today's win. More on Vince's exciting win...

USET Approves Selection Procedures for 2001 CSIO Spruce Meadows

Each year the USET sends a squad of riders to represent the United States at the Masters Tournament at Spruce Meadows in Calgary, Canada.  In years which a championship is being held, teams have been selected based on performance in selection trials being held for other squads (e.g. Olympic Games, Pan American Games or World Equestrian Games).  With no selection trials being held in 2001, the squad for Spruce Meadows will be chosen based on the USET Computer List ranking as is the case with other CSIO and CSI competitions in which interest exceeds the number of available invitations. Horse Quote for the Week

Two words not commonly related to winning or losing at the horse show ring correlate to the color of the ribbons received. The two words are 'act' and 'react.' Winners act. Nonwinners react.

Maritime All Around Cowboy Championships This Weekend!

A competition never seen before in the Maritime Provinces. This weekend event is the true test of rider and horse as entrants compete in five fast-paced and exciting events designed to show the versatility of the cow horse and the cowboy. At the end of two days, the five top finalists will match their skills (and trade horses) to prove just who the top cowboy - or cowgirl - in the Maritimes really is! Don't miss this exciting event where contestants test their skills and abilities in individual penning, four corner barrel racing, camp drafting, obstacle race, bareback cow chase, and the finals! The top cowboy will receive an engraved trophy saddle. More about the event...

Horses in Unexpected Places

What is a 'camp draft'?!? Those who attend the Maritime All Around Cowboy Championships in Sussex, NB this weekend will get a real live demonstration. This unusual event sees a cowboy cut a cow from the heard and take it through a prescribed pattern. This event originates in Australia where the cowboys sometimes guide the cow through a figure eight pattern. In Sussex the contestants will put the cow through a cloverleaf barrel pattern - it promises to be a great spectator sport!!
