Maritime All Around Cowboy Championships
June 2 & 3, 2001
Ronnie Wilkins Penning Corral,
Princess Louise Show Park,
Sussex NB

A competition never seen before in the Maritime Provinces. A true test of rider and horse, entrants will compete in five fast-paced and exciting events designed to show the versatility of the cow horse and the cowboy. At the end of the two days, the top five finalists will match their skills and prove just who the top cowboy (or cowgirl!) in the Maritimes really is!!!

Individual Penning
  • Within a 90 second time limit, entrant must separate from the herd and pen three head of cattle with the same assigned identity number (cows may be penned individually or together).
  • There is no rule regarding trash over the line but trash in the pen receives a no time (90 secs).
  • The same cow may not be penned twice or 90 seconds will be received. If a cow that has been counted as penned, leaves the pen and then re-enters on its own or with another cow that entrant is penned this would not count as re-penning that cow.
  • The pen will set to the side as in a top hand class.
  • The cow must be all the way in the pen but does not have to remain in the pen once the judge has acknowledged that the cow is in (whistle or horn).
  • The rider may call time at any time at any place in the ring by raising his hand.
  • The front of the pen will be the start of the timer.
  • General rules of SNB Cattle Penning Club apply as to roughing, hazing, being committed to the cows, etc.
  • Placings will be determined by total cattle/total time.
Four Corner Barrel Racing
  • This is the gymkhana class. The intent is that the pattern will not be one that is normally run by competitors to show their versatility.
  • A 5 second penalty will be added for each barrel knocked over.
  • Riders must start from inside the ring (no running start from outside the ring)
  • Elimination such as for off course will receive a 60 second time for the class.
  • Total time will determine the placings.
Camp Drafting
  • Entrants must guide a cow of their assigned number through the regular cloverleaf pattern around 3 barrels.
  • Start and Finish line will be between the first two barrels.
  • When the flag is dropped the rider may cross the start line. As his horse's nose crosses the start line his cow number will be announced and the timer started.
  • The entrant will receive 1 point for each barrel negotiated with the same cow and 1 point for bringing that cow across the finish line between the barrels. This will give the entrant a possible 4 points over a total time.
  • Horse and rider must follow the cow around the barrel, completing the barrel pattern themselves in order to receive the point.
  • Maximum time allowed 60 seconds.
  • When the maximum time allowed is reached rider will receive the points he has accumulated with the last cow he has worked.
  • Entrant may switch to another of his numbered cows at any time but must start the barrel pattern again with that cow. Any barrels negotiated with previous cows will not count.
  • If the riders cow returns to the herd part way through the run, and if the rider recuts the same cow, he may pick up the pattern where he left off rather than starting over at the beginning as he would have to do if he had cut a new cow.
  • Rider may not be pushing any trash cattle with his designated number in order for the barrel to count.
  • Excessive running of the same cow would be considered roughing.
  • Total points over total time will determine placings.
Obstacle Race
  • Ranch type obstacles to test cow horses willingness.
  • Total points per obstacles/total time with a maximum time allowed of 90 seconds.
  • Obstacles must be negotiated in the numbered order and may only be done once. You may skip any obstacle but you may not come back to it later.
  • Scoring:
    #1 - Jump - 2 points
1 point if the jump is negotiated but knocked down.
#2 - Tire Drag - 2 points if negotiated cleanly, returning rope to peg
1 point if negotiated but either the barrel is knocked over or the rope is not returned to the peg
    #3 - Back up - 2 points
1 point if completed but horse steps over or on poles
#4 - Side Pass (Right or left) - 2 points
1 point if completed but horse steps on or over poles
#5 - Gate - 1 point for opening and passing through
    1 point for closing
  • Maximum 10 points
Bareback Cow Chase Class
  • For All Around Cowboy - must be bareback
  • For Novice Cowboy - bareback is optional and those completing the course bareback will have their time cut in half
  • Greenhorn - must compete with a saddle
  • Wearing of chaps in this class is prohibited
  • When the flag is dropped entrant must cross the designated start line to start the timer and receive his cow number.
  • Entrant must take one cow through the prescribed pattern of three gates.
  • Entrant may switch to another of his numbered cows any time but must begin the pattern again.
  • If the riders cow returns to the herd part way through the run, and if the rider recuts the same cow, he may pick up the pattern where he left off rather than starting over at the beginning as he would have to do as he cut a new cow.
  • Entrant can call time at any time by raising their hand.
  • Excessive running of cows could result in a no time (90 secs).
  • Time finishes when the cow goes through the last gate.
  • Total gate/total time will determine the placings. Maximum time allowed is 90 seconds.
  • The show committee and directors of SNB Cattle Penning Club strongly advises that any participant not capable of managing their horse in a safe and controlled manner while riding bareback should not attempt to do so at this competition and, therefore, should enter a division where they are not required to ride bareback.
FINALS - All Around Cowboy Competition
Individual Penning
  • There will be no finals with a horse exchange for the Novice and Greenhorn Divisions. These divisions will receive their placings on the points they have accumulated in the 5 events.
  • Top five all around cowboys will draw and exchange horses for this final competition.
  • Once names are drawn time will be allowed for the exchange of saddles if necessary.
  • Entrants may not ride the new horse until the 5 minute warm up that will be designated for this purpose.
  • Rules of the previous individual penning class will be followed.
  • Points awarded for this class will total with the points already earned in the earlier competitions. Points for these finals will be as follows.
    1st - 25 points
    2nd - 20 points
    3rd - 15 points
    4th - 10 points
    5th - 5 points
  • Total cattle/total time will determine placings.
  • Ties of total points over all: All Around Cowboy - tied riders will exchange horses and do another round of individual penning to decide the placing. Novice and Greenhorn - will do another round of individual penning on their own horse.
  • The show committee and directors of SNB Cattle Penning Club recommends that any participant not comfortable with riding another person's horse, or allowing their own horse to be ridden by another contestant, should enter a division where this is not required (Novice or Greenhorn).
