Michael’s Andy

March 24, 1981-May 13, 2000

“In the steady gaze of the horse shines a silent eloquence that speaks of love and loyalty, strength and courage.  It is the window that reveals to us how willing his spirit, how generous his heart.”

Michael’s Andy entered my life one day in June of 1996.  A friend had told me about a Standardbred gelding in need of a friend and strangely at that same time, I was in search of just that.  From the first moment I saw his big brown eyes and he nudged me with his muzzle, I knew he was something special.  The months to come were filled with many hours on the trail, new discoveries but mostly the start of a friendship unlike any I have ever known.

Through the years, we learned what this thing called “dressage” is all about.  We discovered that trotting poles are not for jumping and that bounce jumps are not actually oxers.  Mike learned that equitation classes were not all about meeting the other horses and that trail rides were indeed meant for having fun.

Sadly, on May 13, 2000, Michael’s Andy was gone forever.  A short time later I received a video of the day my new filly came home and Mike was on the tape (thanks Michelle).  As I watched, I found myself remembering quiet moments in his stall.  How he would whinnie when I entered the barn, the way he would nuzzle me when I was sad and the soft feel of his breath on my cheek.  If we had not won even a single ribbon, Mike would still be my champion, my dream come true.  He was there for all my highs and all my lows.  His love is something I will hold close to my heart forever, he truly taught me what friendship is meant to be.

I am thankful for every day that Mike blessed my life.  I know he is happy now and is running and playing in a grassy pasture.  Mostly I know he is looking down giving us his best “treat face” waiting for the goodies to arrive.

Special thanks to Dolores and Tommy Ferris for their exceptional kindness and loving care of Michael’s Andy.   To Sheri Salmon, Jane McKiel, Christie McKiel and Michelle Anderson for being my strength on that last day.  To all my friends at Jorrock Stables (and elsewhere) for their kindness and compassion in the months since Mike has gone.  To my parents, Donna and David Goss for their love and support.  I will never forget all of your kind words and loving support.

Owner, rider, best friend,

Christy
