Galloway's Uptown Girl

Galloway's Uptown Girl

The Maritimes loses a 'great one'...

Almost every Equestrian in the Maritimes has seen her or heard of her. Gallaway’s Uptown Girl had an outstanding career in the Dressage, Jumper and Eventing disciplines. Sadly, she was humanely destroyed on July 6, just a day before she was to compete in the Preliminary Horse Trials at the farm where she had spent most of her 16 years – the result of a freak accident in the paddock.

Uptown Girl (Gidget) was purchased as a 4 year old Dressage prospect by Alison Gallagher. 'Gidget' was the Basic 1 and 2 New Brunswick Dressage Champion in her first year of showing. The following year, she was the Basic 3 and 4 Champion. She spent a winter in Florida training with Ashley Nicol and successfully competed in Dressage shows in West Palm Beach and New York.

It became clear that Gidget liked to jump. So much so, that the day before Dressage shows would be spent jumping fences. Michael Gallagher began showing Gidget in Pre Green Hunter followed by Hopeful Jumper.

Gidget’s next rider was Denielle Gallagher. They went on to win the Regional Pony Club Rally, New Brunswick Hopeful Jumper Champion (twice), Jumper Rookie of the Year Award, New Brunswick Low Jumper Champion and New Brunswick Level 1 Jumper Champion. Gidget and Denielle won jumper classes all over New Brunswick, as well as in Windsor and Charlottetown. In addition to being an outstanding Jumper, Gidget was an Eventer. She has won every Training level and Preliminary level event in New Brunswick and PEI at least once. She has been the N.B. Training Level Champion as well as the N.B. Preliminary Level Champion. They were also on the Canadian Reserve Champion Team at the Preliminary Pony Club Rally held at Checkmate in Ontario.

In 2001, Carolyn Dohoo of PEI purchased Gidget. They competed successfully in Training Level Eventing, winning 3 of the 4 events they competed in. Carolyn and Gidget also won the Pony Club Jumper Championship. She is the only horse to have her name on the challenge trophy twice – once with Carolyn and once with Denielle.

Gidget’s 12 year show record in the Maritimes was truly remarkable. There has never been another horse in recent memory that has competed so successfully across so many different disciplines …… and there probably will never be another one again.
